LASER REFRACTIVE SURGERY

Lasik - Laser Refractive Surgery | American Eye Center Vietnam

What is Laser Refractive Surgery?

Laser Refractive Surgery is a safe, painless surgical procedure to permanently correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, allowing freedom from glasses and contact lenses and enhancing quality of life.

Since its development in the 1990s and many modern advancements, LASIK is now the most successful and common vision correction procedure, performed on nearly 1 million patients worldwide every year.

Benefits of LASIK Surgery

Rapid Vision Improvement

The 15-minute procedure is painless, with most patients experiencing immediate visual improvement post-surgery.

High Success Rate

With success rates >95% to eliminate glasses and contact lenses, LASIK is one of the most reliable and successful procedures available.

Maximum Safety

LASIK has a lower risk of complications compared to the daily use of contact lenses.

 Fast Recovery
Many patients are able to return to normal activities within 24-48 hours after the procedure.

Suitable Candidates

  • ✔️ Age 18 or older
  • ✔️ Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are stable for at least 1 year
  • ✔️ Good overall eye health without underlying condition
  • ✔️ Good corneal thickness and health

Most common types of Laser Refractive Surgery

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

  • Procedure: A femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap, which is lifted. An excimer laser then reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct vision. The flap is repositioned to heal naturally.

  • Advantages: Fast visual recovery, less postoperative discomfort, allows for additional enhancement laser treatment (touch-up), can treat hyperopia (farsightedness) and higher levels of refractive errors.

  • Disadvantages: Flap-related risks (rare); not ideal for thin corneas.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

  • Procedure: The outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed, and an excimer laser reshapes the corneal surface. A bandage contact lens is placed to aid healing.

  • Advantages: Safer for thin corneas, no flap complications, suitable for people in jobs or activities with high risk for eye injury, can treat irregular corneal surfaces.

  • Disadvantages: More discomfort post-surgery, longer vision recovery time.

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

  • Procedure: A femtosecond laser creates a small, lens-shaped piece of tissue (lenticule) within the cornea, which is removed through a tiny incision to reshape the cornea and correct vision.

  • Advantages: No flap, small incision, quick recovery, lower chance of dry eye.
  • Disadvantages: Currently limited to nearsightedness and astigmatism, not yet approved for farsightedness; can't correct higher levels of refractive errors; may increase higher-order aberrations affecting night vision; doesn't allow for touch-up laser treatment with SMILE.

Consult out expert ophthalmologists for a thorough exam to determine the best option based on your eye health, corneal thickness, refractive error, and lifestyle.
